Ensemble Director - Glossop Intermediate Wind Band

Rachel Whibley

Rachel was born in Wakefield and began her music studies on the clarinet, moving to the bassoon at the age of 12.

After a "Fame"- style time at sixth form college, she gained a place at the Royal Northern College of Music. During her time there she started to freelance with many of the major orchestras in the North West, and also began her teaching career, working at Rossall school in Fleetwood and the RNCM Junior school.

After completing her music degree, Rachel was employed 2 days a week as a woodwind teacher at St. Benedict's school, Derby, whilst pursuing her freelance career, playing regularly with the RLPO, BBC Philharmonic, Manchester Camerata, Northern Chamber Orchestra and the Bolshoi Ballet.

Between 1996 and 1999 Rachel and her husband Daniel, a double bass player, lived and worked in Dublin. These years were filled with full-time playing, performing with the RTE orchestras and the Ulster orchestra in Belfast.

Settling in Glossop after her return to Britain, Rachel has taught many local children, both as an instrumental teacher and as an ensemble director, striving to inspire others with her love of music. She now has two children, one of whom now plays trombone in the newly formed Glossop Beginner Band, and attempts to successfully combine motherhood, teaching and playing.

Ensemble Director - New Mills Training Band

Jonathan Davies

Jonathan was born in Sheffield and started playing the organ at the age of 6. At 10 he started to learn the cornet with Woodhouse Prize Band in Sheffield and progressed to assistant principal with Chapeltown Silver Prize Band.

After completing his statutory education his passion for music lead to him to be offered a place at the Royal Northern College of Music in Manchester to study cornet under the guidance of Roger Webster. This has lead to fantastic opportunities to play with the Black Dyke Band and at the Royal Albert Hall with the college Wind Band during his study.

His unique style as a conductor gave the opportunity to attend a conducting seminar, directed by Richard Evans his mentor, providing him with a great experience for his future in conducting.

Jonathan has a wide range of musical interests and as a member of the Derbyshire County Youth Jazz Orchestra he toured Japan in 2005. On a number of occasions Jonathan has featured as a solo performer on the organ.Jonathan conducted Denton brass band from 2007 to 2009 having one of the most successful periods over their recent history, gaining their best ever results at Whit Friday. He is currently associate conductor of the Delph Band where he has just won his first major contest, the Third Section Championships at Butlins, an achievement he is delighted with.
