A Dark Peak success story
Founded five years ago with a small group of singers, the Dark Peak Young Voices Choir has grown into a flourishing, two-tier ensemble under the expert guidance of professional singer Claire Surman and accompanist Rachel Steadman. The choirs have become a regular feature of Dark Peak concerts, as well as giving their own independent performances.

Why every Dark Peak Instrumentalist should join the Dark Peak Junior or Senior Choir
Singing in a choir is not just enormously rewarding and fun—it’s one of the best musical training grounds for any instrumentalist. It helps develop all the core aural and expressive skills required to be a successful instrumentalist, improving your sense of pitch and ensemble, helping sight-reading, breathing technique, and expressive phrasing. Plus, countless studies highlight the incredible boost singing gives to both mental and physical well-being.
That’s why we strongly encourage all young musicians in our instrumental ensembles to join our choirs!
Choir Groups at a Glance:
Junior Choir (Ages 7–11): Focuses on building self-confidence, vocal technique, expressive musicality and ensemble skills through fun and rewarding music in a nurturing and supportive environment.
Senior Choir (Ages 11–17): Further builds confidence, musicality, vocal technique, blend and ensemble through a wide variety of fun, more complex and challenging music in a nurturing and supportive environment.
Big Ambitions
We have big ambitions, including expanding our Senior Choir in particular. More voices mean we can tackle even more complex choral arrangements, enter competitions, take advantage of invitations, such as the recent invitation we received to perform at Symphony Hall in Birmingham, and perhaps even join the other ensembles for Dark Peak's next overseas tour.
