Join the Orchestra of the Peaks for an afternoon of popular classics with a theme of Folk Songs and Fairy Tales

In a tribute to Tchaikovsky's magical fairytale ballets the programme starts with the famous Scene from Swan Lake followed by two of the best loved movements from Sleeping Beauty , the Rose Adagio and the well-known waltz.

A ballet dancer

We then take a journey down one of Europe's great rivers in Smetana's tone poem "Vltava" which describes in musical imagery the course of the river from its source in the Bohemian mountains, through magical glens, across the St John's Rapids, past Prague and finally into the River Elbe and out to sea. Along its course the music draws on traditional Czech folk music to describe events such as a folk wedding and a hunt along the river banks.

A river with woods

Keeping to the story telling theme the programme includes a movement from Rimsky Korsakov's Scheherazade, The Young Prince and Princess. Based on the take of the "Arabian Nights", Scheherazade tells how the princess save her own life by mesmerizing the Sultan with stories and tales.

A painting of a woman

Ralph Vaughan Williams' lively setting of English folk songs completes the main part of the programme, but the concert concludes with the rousing "Lord of the Dance" from Michael Flatley's hit Irish Dance musical - guaranteed to get everyone dancing!
